Anyway, I was on the One Laptop Per Child forum. OLPC is my cause, by the way. There was one thread that was titled "One Laptop Per Child?"
And the first thing in the thread was this:
why do children need laptops anyway?
seems kinda selfish to me
theres more worthy causes in the world.
i dont understandd.
And then a bunch of people started agreeing. As an example, someone said:
why would u want a lap top wen ur starving
And someone responded:
haha ikr
thats messed uppp
Ahahaha, you guys are so smart! You think you've got it all figured out, right? Those kids in Africa are so selfish for wanting a laptop more than food! I'm sure you guys are positively sure that how it is, right? They're all just whining for laptops instead of food!
NO. N TO THE FUCKING O.
First of all, they're not going to be getting laptops that are thousands of dollars. These laptops are low grade, low power, small, rugged $100 dollar laptops. They're not getting macbooks or anything like that.
Second of all, these kids aren't going to be going on myspace or facebook or youtube or anything. They're getting these laptops to learn, be connected with friends and be connected with the rest of the world. They get these laptops and they get excited about learning so they learn and they share what they know and soon a lot more kids know a lot more stuff. So don't think they're being selfish or anything. No, they're just trying to get a FUCKING EDUCATION TO BETTER THEIR LIVES. SORRY IF THAT PISSES YOU OFF.
And third of all, if you're going to attack a cause, why don't you do it in a smart, educated, well spoken manner? I don't respect already just because of your ignorance but when you talk like that, it makes me disrespect you even more.
And fourth of all, it's called RESEARCH. It's this thing that you do when you don't know something, so you look up and find out about it. This is what you do before you start accusing things wrongfully and jumping to conclusions. That's how you sound smarter and that's how you get people to respect you.
And someone posted to the thread:
Some wow, are idiots. Educating the world is progressing our present. You've been educated already so why do you care about them recieving a laptop huh. Well some shouldn't be jealous. A laptop is portable unlike a computer. Their are many reasons why this cause is doing what they do, you just might be too blind to notice certain things in this world. It's a non-profit organization wanting to change the world just like your cause. Leave it alone.
And I was like "Amen! You tell 'em!"
And someone responded to their post:
You did not have to be so harsh. I think, we all believe in what we want to believe in. It's just how I am...
And the person totally gave into that! They were like "Yeah, you're right. I was being harsh."
And I was like "NO! NO YOU'RE NOT! These ignorant people need someone to set them straight about what they're saying and doing! They can think this cause is stupid if they want to but they need all the facts first and need to be informed by a supporter who really believes in this cause! Damn it!"
I posted a polite, informational, well spoken comment informing the creator of the thread what OLPC is. Other people did that too, but I felt that someone else should post, too. Everyone who supports OLPC and even people who don't should post, explaining what a great cause it is.
It just really pisses me off that someone who say something like that. It pisses me off because one, they're not even informed! They're just running their mouth without knowing the full facts. It makes them look stupid and ignorant. And two, it's a really great cause! These kids who are learning will have more opportunities. I'm not saying they're going to be doctors when they grow up but they'll have more chances than their parents did. So they're being helped and getting what they deserve.
